Business activities - consulting and training

An informal concise version of my curriculum vitae

Examples of my work

Computer systems design

My degree was in Mathematical Physics. My earlier career was especially in the design of large-scale computer systems. This led to my being appointed a Fellow of the British Computer Society.

I have continued to apply the rigorous approach of "hard science" underpinned by appropriate mathematics since my degree. In other words, whether I am designing computer systems, or business processes, or changes to society, I apply sound engineering techniques. Even when working with "soft" subjects, there is no excuse for sloppy thinking.

Business consulting and training

My more recent career has been in business consulting, typically applying solution-oriented engineering and modelling principles to the analysis of business problems. I have also spend many days in classrooms delivering training to help others apply similar skills. All of this has taken me to Australia, Japan, Singapore, United States of America, Canada, Sweden, Republic of Ireland, Germany, and Spain.

I have mostly worked under contract for others, and so I cannot show much of my work here.

However, I have written some papers in a private capacity.

Photography

I was interested in photography from pre-teens, and had work (photographs and text) published in the photographic media and on television while still at school. Any success I achieve with photography means more to me than all the above!

My photography has taken me around the world, across most of Europe, much of Scandinavia, many states of the USA, Canada, Ecuador (including the Galapagos Islands) in South America, various countries in South East Asia, some countries in the Indian subcontinent, China (before and after the union with Hong Kong), Hong Kong before the union, Australia, etc.

Analysis of child support and related topics

Although childfree, I became interested in the reform of the UK's child support system, after an earlier special interest in social security and welfare reform. I am the founder and Chief Analyst for Child Support Analysis, a small independent think-tank that aims to take a comprehensive look beyond the current stage of the UK's child support reforms towards what should follow them.

I edit its web site.

I contributed at the Green Paper stage of the CSA reform process. I gave evidence to the Social Security Select Committee after the CSA White Paper was published (and so some of my material is in Hansard, the record of the proceedings of the UK Parliament). I am consulted by, and provide information to, academics, the media, politicians and lobby groups on child support matters. I have been a studio guest in a BBC TV programme, and have been interviewed on the UK's national radio network.
